The magistrates were responsible for taking care of the finances and judicial obligations throughout the Roman Republic.

But honestly, some magistrates were even responsible for entertainment - for those within Rome, such as festivals and games for those to enjoy (think of it as the magistrates being the party hosts and the bankers).
