The answer is the Feudal system. It is a type of system in which people work in exchange for protection. According to this system, the king had a ruling lord whom he owed the loyalty and service. He offers land and protection. The king also sometimes gives lands to nobles and even the church in exchange of their influence having to have people protect his land.
