Did slaves just go to the colonies in North America?

Answer: BECAUSE the north had went against slavery laws the the south allowed. Therefore if a slave were to run away they would head north and once your past that line the slave would be  free and would never be owned again the only worry would be changing the name given at birth so that if slave hunters were given permission to hunt down slaves in free states the used to be slave would still be safe.
