When multiplying like bases with different exponents, such as x^y*x^z, you add the exponents, so the x^y*x^z would equal x^(y+z). In your case, your [tex]2^3*2^3*2^{-4}=2^{3+3+(-4)}=2^{3+3-4}=2^{6-4}=2^2=4[/tex].
