A speaker might use humor in a persuasive speech to make himself more likable and appeal to the audience and create a connection. And to also keep the audience engaged in what he/she is saying

I think a speaker would use humor in this because personally, I think a long, boring speech is not fun. So why not try to lighten things up a bit by adding some comedy into it. :)
